Across islands where colonial laws still strangle freedom—and where global backlashes are emboldening the old hatreds—Pride organizers are not just building visibility. They are defending it with everything they have.

In Trinidad and Tobago, a 2018 High Court ruling had found sections of the Sexual Offences Act unconstitutional, offering a brief moment of hope. But in March 2025, the Court of Appeal reversed much of that progress. The act of buggery, even between consenting adults in private, remains illegal, punishable by up to five years in prison.

Acts of gross indecency between men are also criminalized once again. Although the maximum penalties have been reduced, the chilling message is clear: queerness remains criminalized. Progress here is not linear—it is contested, fragile, and constantly under threat. Across the region, funding for SRHR (sexual and reproductive health and rights) has dried up under global conservative pressure. International grants are vanishing. Hard-won protections are evaporating. The safety nets we thought we could count on are crumbling. The coming year threatens even more uncertainty, as funding gaps widen and new laws embolden those who would rather we disappear.

And still—we rise.

Events like Barbados Pride, Montego Bay Pride in Jamaica, and Trinidad and Tobago’s Pride Arts Festival aren’t just colorful. They’re risky. Permits denied. Venues canceled last minute. Smear campaigns. Intimidation tactics.

Still, activists find ways to gather—in encrypted threads, in borrowed spaces, in whispers over cracked phones. Still, queer youth sketch maps for the next safehouse, the next underground rally, the next emergency hotline—knowing each move carries risk, but moving anyway.

Organizations like ECADE (Eastern Caribbean Alliance for Diversity and Equality) aren’t just advocating for legal reform—they’re teaching survival. CAISO in Trinidad and Tobago isn’t just lobbying—they’re tending to the broken places the system refuses to see.

Caribbean Pride is not borrowed from the global North. It’s not sanitized for corporate sponsorships. It is messy, sacred, defiant—woven from church songs remixed into protest anthems, from grief, from glitter, from memory that refuses to be erased.
